RECERTIFICATION

To maintain the integrity of your certification, ASQ requires that you recertify every three years — either by RU credits or by testing. The purpose of recertifying is to ensure that as an ASQ-certified quality professional you maintain the same level of knowledge originally demonstrated when you passed the written examination. If you do not recertify, your certification will lapse and ASQ will no longer recognize you as “certified.”

NOTE!

  • CQT, CMI, CQI, CQPA, SSGB & CQIA do NOT require recertification.
  • The HACCP and Biomedical add-on certifications to the CQA will automatically be recertified each time your CQA is recertified. Otherwise, your CQA-HACCP and/or Biomedical add-on will be decertified, along with your CQA, if your CQA is not maintained; either by journal or exam.

You may also choose to recertify by exam every three years in lieu of recertifying by RU credits

Refresher courses, for initial certification exams may not be counted towards that recertification period, but may be applied towards another recertification if it lies within that certification BOK or is job enhancing.

Recertification by RU credits is a simple process of obtaining a minimum of 18 recertification units (RUs) within your three-year certification period. You may accumulate the 18 RU credits from professional activities that either increase your knowledge of the Body of Knowledge (BOK) or is job enhancing. To receive the employment RU credits, at least one area of your job duties, responsibilities, and/or functions must fall in at least one area of your certification(s) Body of Knowledge (BOK). Just remember that all activities may be started before your three-year recertification period, but must be completed by the expiration date.

RU credits can also be earned in the following areas:
• Author or co-author of a published book
• Quality Press reviewer
• U.S. Standards Group on QEDS
• ASQ Chat Events

Benefits of retiring your certification(s):

  • You are not required to collect and submit the 18 RU credits or recertify by exam to retire your certification
  • Your certification will be left in “good standing”
  • Your certification will not lapse and be deleted from your records (in case you need to reinstate it)
  • To reinstate your certification, you are not required to submit 18 RU credits or recertify by exam.

Are You Retired?

If you are an ASQ Certified Professional who has retired from full-time, active employment and have reached age 55, you may request, through validation by the Section Examining Committee (SEC)/Recertification Chair or the ASQ HQ recertification coordinator, a “retired” status to be designated on your certification(s) wallet card and other certification records.
You may apply for retired status up to six months before or after your certification(s) expiration date. You will no longer be required to recertify to have your ASQ certifications be designated as "Retired" status.
Once you retire your certification(s), you will receive a new certificate and wallet card. The only difference from the certificate and wallet card you receive is that it will no longer have an expiration date, but will show "retired".

If for some reason you would need to go back to full-time or part-time employment, you may reinstate your certification(s) by contacting the ASQ HQ recertification coordinator and stating your situation. From the date you are reinstated, that will be the beginning of your new three-year recertification period and you will then begin to accrue the required RU credits needed to recertify your certification(s) by your new expiration date.
