I'm a great believer in luck, and I find the harder I work the more I have of it.

Thomas Jefferson (1743 - 1826),

Job Hunting Tips in a Turbulent Market (National Post)

Start now: Don't take time off. Executives can take six to 12 months to find a job.

Treat the process like a job: Establish a schedule and hold yourself accountable for daily progress.

Be open to interim posts: Companies are cutting fixed costs, but may have consulting opportunities, which would give you income, maintain your skills and move you to the front of the line when hiring begins.

Be willing to commute or relocate: Know where the positions are going in your field and be willing to move for the right opportunity.

Don't panic: Appearing over-anxious diminishes your value. And you don't want to jump from one precarious position to the next. But remember dream jobs are scarce.

Be flexible: Don't get hung up on compensation and title, accepting a pay grade or title below your ideal may work to your advantage. As you exceed expectations, title and salary will adjust.

Keep sharp: Stay current on the latest news, trends and technologies important in your industry.
