2016_QAEThe Story: Parmerit Inc of Strathroy is the recipient of the 2016 Quality Awards for Excellence presented by the London & District chapter of the American Society for Quality at a banquet at the Four Points Sheraton on November 10, 2016.

Parmerit was started by Ed Veeke in 1988 in a small drive shed just outside of Arkona, Ontario as a custom machining & fabrication resource for farmers in the area. Parmerit moved to Strathroy after 2 ½ years of working out of the family farm and began to dabble into custom automation. Customer demand drove the company to become a turnkey automation shop being able to provide design/engineering services, fabricating, machining, assembly, electrical engineering/wiring & programing in house.

Strictly an automation shop until 2006 when the market crashed, Parmerit’s strategy became diversification. They began to purchase boring mills to be able to complete customers custom machining projects. Today, Parmerit is both in custom machining/fabrication & custom automation/equipment.

Located in a modern, highly-efficient facility at 705 Wright St. in Strathroy, Parmerit has 49 employees on payroll & currently runs 2 shifts (7-3, 2:30-1:00) Monday-Friday.MC_Joe_DaSilva

Questioned as to why Parmerit was selected as the recipient of the 2016 Quality Awards for Excellence,  ASQ London Quality Awards for Excellence Assessors identified that Parmerit exhibited 3 outstanding quality characteristics.

  1. First is Parmerit’s customer focus - To become an extension of their customers’ operations by being an elite supplier of service, quality and technical ability. A preferred partner, who has not lost a customer they didn’t want to lose  in the past 5 years. As Ed Veeke told me, “We will continue to fire customers that don’t allow us to make a profit. Unprofitable customers have no place in our vision and strategies.”
  2. Second is Parmerit’s commitment to controlled growth by developing Strathroy & area employees. Parmerit’s employees are primarily skilled tradespeople many of whom have come up through their apprenticeship program to become full members of Parmerit’s highly developed cross-functional team. Of the 49 current employees, 12 are in the skilled trades’ apprenticeship program, an outstanding 25%. Parmerit has proven to be a magnet organization as a Strathroy area employer, providing more training opportunities for their apprentices, being interested in their people, their families, their lives, and continually striving to have fun while we work.
  3. Finally, Parmerit’s focus on continual improvement in all areas of the company - encouraging everyone to come forward with improvements that can make the shop cleaner, more efficient & a safer place to work; investing in new equipment and computer systems for greater quality and efficiency; implementing a 5S program and other Lean Manufacturing techniques; and working with local suppliers at the quote stage so they become an extension of Parmerit’s internal resources.
