Guest Speaker: Dr. Gordon Campbell

Come out, join us and learn the latest advancements in the development of medical devices that are used to help save our lives.

Our guest speaker is Dr. Gordon Campbell. Dr. Campbell is a senior research officer in the Integrated Manufacturing Technologies Institute (IMTI) of the National Research Council of Canada (NRC).

Dr. Campbell specializes in the development of tissue-mimicking phantoms. A first application of his research is the development of a phantom for the treatment of prostate cancer using brachytherapy. This minimally-invasive surgical treatment relies upon the insertion of needles into the prostate using ultrasound imaging guidance, in order to accurately place about 100 radioactive seeds. Another early application is a phantom that mimics the MRI (3 Tesla) biophysical properties of the brain of an infant which would be suitable for developing the procedures to diagnose brain anomalies. These can be done on a phantom without the expense and ethical considerations for testing with animal or human tissue, while also facilitating the “objective evidence” required for regulatory approvals that will improve the efficiency of later clinical trials.

After his presentation, Dr Campbell has agreed to a short tour of the NRC labs to show us how they help industry make improvements to their products and processes. See how your tax $ are being put to use.
