NEXT MEETING -

ASQ London Section 0403 presents….

Tour - Biotron Experimental Climate Change Research Facility

Date: Thursday April 10, 2008
6:30 PM – 9:00 PM

Location: UWO Western Science Centre, Room 191

Map to Biotron and parking:
Free parking is arranged in the Middlesex lot shown in the attached map. This is right next to the Biotron. The gate will be open
from 6-7pm on April 10 and people can exit anytime.

Biotron Introduction:
• Human beings are causing unprecedented damage to the Earth - in fact we are in danger of exceeding the planet's ability to sustain human life.
• A new facility at Western offers hope – the ability to peer into the future of climate change so that we may gain the perspective to steer ourselves on a less destructive path.
• Opening in 2008, the Biotron Experimental Climate Change Research Centre represents a $30 million dollar infrastructure investment dedicated to answering the most pressing environmental questions and to developing biotechnologies that can restore and protect ecosystem health.
• The Biotron is a high-containment facility housing an array of custom-designed controlled environments for plants, insects, and microorganisms. Large, sealed, glass Biomes allow scientists to simulate climate change and pollution in conditions ranging from arctic winter to desert or tropical, and everything in between.
• The Biotron also stimulates the bioeconomy by providing labs to develop environmentally friendly products such as renewable fibres, bioplastics, medicinal compounds, and biofuels.
• With these tools the Biotron will help us understand the impact of climate change and pollution on organisms so we can be better prepared to make decisions that protect ecosystems and our planet as a whole.

Speaker is Mr. Amar Singh , General Manager of Biotron - The University of Western Ontario, Biotron Experimental Climate Change Research Centre.

After completing his degree in Environmental Science at the University of Toronto, Amar Singh honed his business and technology skills at an international IT consulting and sales firm in Toronto. He was later hired by a strategic management consulting firm and in 2004 he was assigned as the project manager for the development of the $30 million Biotron Experimental Climate Change Research Centre at The University of Western Ontario. Amar also worked on science and engineering proposals at Ryerson University and the University of Guelph, including the $20 million, multi-institutional Autonomous Robotic Greenhouse proposal. In May 2006, Amar became an employee of Western where he was appointed to his current position as General Manager of the Biotron. Amar is certified by the Canadian Environmental Certification Approvals Board in the areas of Sustainable Development Management and Environmental Research & Development (R&D).

Attend this session and learn:
1. The impacts of climate change on ecosystems
2. CFIA/PHAC Containment Level 2, 2++, and 3
3. World's most advanced controlled research environments (glass chambers and 6m soil core chamber)
4. Confocal and electron microscopy
5. Project management
